STORYLINE:
The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III held a mass in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Thursday as part of annual Easter celebrations.
The Patriarch washed the feet of other clergy members, symbolising Jesus's washing of the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper.
According to the Bible's New Testament, Jesus washed the feet of his 12 disciples when they ate one last meal together the night before he was taken away to be crucified.
The ritual symbolises humility and is performed predominantly in Catholic churches on the last Thursday before Easter.
Orthodox Christians use the Julian calendar, so their Easter celebrations often fall on a different date to the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, which follow the Gregorian Calendar.
