On RetroBB today we’re diving into Jet Set Willy — Matthew Smith’s 1984 follow-up to Manic Miner and one of the ZX Spectrum’s most legendary games.
Bigger, stranger, and more ambitious, Jet Set Willy let players explore 60 interconnected rooms in Willy’s chaotic mansion. But it also came with frustrations: the dreaded colour code protection, the infamous Attic bug, and some of the most punishing platforming on the Spectrum.
Software Projects even turned the chaos into publicity with a competition — and when the bugs were uncovered, they issued what’s remembered as one of the very first video game patches, published as a set of official POKEs in magazines.
📀 Highlights covered in this video:
The story behind Jet Set Willy
The copy protection colour code
The Attic bug & game-breaking errors
The official Software Projects POKEs (first patch)
Cheats, fan hacks & the game’s legacy
Did you play Jet Set Willy back in the day? Did you rage at the colour code sheet, or type in the POKEs from magazines? Share your memories in the comments!
