Training Our Lesser Antillean Iguana! [Paignton Zoo]

Описание: When Bob and Marley the lesser antillean iguanas came to Paignton Zoo, they were both a little nervous but over time they have settled in nicely and are currently being trained! How?

The process is called tap training, over time we taught Bob and Marley that a tap on the log or stone next to them is us asking for permission to touch them. If the they raise their head, this means "yes you can touch me" if it's a no they simply do not respond or walk away. This tap training allows keepers to interact with the pair and it helps to alleviate stress during health checks. You can think of it as a doctor asking you to "open wide and say ahhh", you know what to expect and with cooperation things go smoothly.

Bob and Marley are Lesser Antillean iguana (iguana delicatissima) can be seen in the Reptile Tropics exhibit at Paignton Zoo. Males are larger than females and are 40 cm long, with an 80 cm tail when fully-grown. Females are two-thirds this size. In the wild they are found in scrub woodlands, rainforests, and mangroves throughout the Lesser Antilles on Saint Barth, Anguilla, St. Eustatius, Guadeloupe, Dominica, and Martinique.
