I have a very high standard for plumbing because it's my father's main trade. I'm more often disappointed by the plumbing I find in houses than I am impressed. That said, I'm not discouraged by these issues as I can fix anything.
This issue in my laundry sink made me laugh after I got over how dumb it was. I could have saved myself some time by really getting low, but I didn't bend down far enough to notice the false P-trap situation before attempting to run a snake to check that the drain was, in fact, clear.
Identifying the false P and testing that your washer discharge pipe is clear are good things to know, so I hope this visual helps a bit.
It's also a good lesson to not take things at face value ; ) It pays off to know your stuff!
