Kelowna mayor defends steady tax increases over Vancouver proposed zero increase
Kelowna Mayor Tom Dyas is defending his council’s approach to taxation, crime policy and infrastructure spending as the city heads into an election year, saying steady financial management and strategic investment are positioning the city for long-term growth.
In a wide-ranging interview from the NowMedia newsroom, Dyas said Kelowna’s more consistent tax increases stand in contrast to other municipalities that fluctuate year to year.
“We see great fluctuations happening throughout the province,” Dyas said. “Yes, maybe somebody has had a zero tax rate, but in previous years they’ve had nine, 10 or 11 per cent tax rates. I believe it’s a lot easier for us to look at being consistent.”
Kelowna has seen cumulative tax increases over the past decade, with another hike expected this year. Dyas argued the city’s approach is deliberate and tied to major infrastructure and service demands.
“We are establishing a fixed amount to be able to deliver the services that we need to deliver to this community without having those huge spikes in taxes,” he said.
