CHOW 2024: Living Laboratories: Ocean Economy Conservation and Acceleration
Sponsored by: Oceankind
With species going extinct from human impacts faster than we can discover them, and the greatest biodiversity found in our Oceans, intrepid explorers are bringing advanced tools to map, monitor, and accelerate solutions and improve decision-making. Entrepreneurs, marine science labs, and tech incubators are exchanging ideas to drive innovation in our oceans for many reasons – more sustainable aquaculture, real-time data management, capturing the ocean’s energy and storage capacity to sequester carbon. The pressure on the Oceans is increasing exponentially. Now, eDNA has the potential to revolutionize ocean decision-making and to reduce the tradeoffs between solutions for species, climate, and human needs. New national policies on marine biodiversity will shine a light on the importance of the interconnectedness of life in our seas with scientific advancements, while local experience and traditional knowledge of biodiversity have just as much to climate-readiness.
Where does accelerating solutions need break-through leadership to clear the way for the advancements we need? How must leadership adapt to roll-out national strategies for eDNA and marine biodiversity to meet the expectations of tech leaders, unconventional thinking, low regulation, and rapid iteration? Can new investments in “Blue Tech” create effective public-private partnership amongst the continuously shifting politics, and how do we make it include, not exclude local communities in the windfall of new science and technological solutions?
