How many Classes do you need in a trademark registration application? And, how do your goods or services get classified? If you're using a mark (which might be a logo, a brand name, a slogan, or a product name) with a range of products and services – say, hats, shirts, restaurant services, water bottles, and beer koozies – you may want to put them in one application to start with. But you'll probably want to divide them up into multiple applications, with one Class per application, to have a portfolio of trademark registration applications and eventually trademark registrations.
Here are the reasons why a portfolio, with one Class per application/registration, is better:
it will be examined more easily
once registered, if any are challenged, it won't affect the others
after registration, if you stop using any, you'll have to divide them
It might be faster and slightly less expensive to file with multiple Classes in one application. But, when you consider the later cost in attorney's fees and USPTO fees to divide an application up, it will likely save you money and lot of hassle in the long run, if you divide up your application with one Class per application from the start.
