The two credit reporting agencies in Canada, Equifax and Transunion, are required to provide you with a free credit report once per year only if you request it.

You should check your credit report every year for accuracy and fraud because often times there are mistakes and you don’t want any surprises when you’re applying for credit, like, a mortgage or a car loan. If you’ve ever had your identity stolen, like your social insurance number, you want to make sure that no one is opening up credit products in your name.

If you find any mistakes on your credit report your first step is to contact your creditor to get it fixed. Your next step is to let Transunion and Equifax know about the mistake. You’ll want to check back in a couple of months to make sure it’s been corrected.

Now, to get your free credit report you should go to http://www.equifax.ca and http://www.transunion.ca. Both websites will have instructions on how to get your credit report for free! Depending on the credit reporting agency and where you live in Canada you can either request your credit report by phone, in-person, through mail or even online! In some cases, you might need some proof of identification. You’ll want to get one credit report from each agency. Some creditors report to Equifax and some report to Transunion. Requesting a credit report from both agencies allows you to get the full picture of what’s happening.

Your credit score will not be included in your free credit report. Both agencies charge a fee for you to get your score. You can pay for it directly on their websites.
