The TRUE Story of St. Valentine (It’s Not About Romance) (14 February): Executed for Marriage

Описание: Yesterday was the feast of St. Valentine — priest, bishop, and Catholic martyr — and his story is far more powerful than modern culture suggests.

In 266 AD, St. Valentine performed clandestine marriages in defiance of unjust Roman government restrictions. He understood a truth that still applies today:

Marriage belongs to God and the Church — not the State.

For defending the sacrament of Holy Matrimony, Valentine was imprisoned. During his imprisonment, he miraculously cured the governor’s daughter of blindness, leading to the governor’s conversion. Yet despite this miracle, he was imprisoned again.

While in prison, he exchanged letters with the young woman and signed them:

“Your Valentine.”

That is the true origin of Valentine’s Day cards.

He was ultimately beheaded for the Faith — a martyr whose blood, not sentimental hearts, gives us the color red associated with February 14th.

Today the world celebrates “love,” yet few remember the martyr who died defending sacramental marriage.

And tragically, in the Novus Ordo calendar, his feast is no longer universally commemorated — even as the world continues to mark his day.

May we recover the courage of St. Valentine — priest, bishop, and martyr — who resisted unjust state intrusion and remained faithful unto death.
