At last, the young Water Mongooses (Atilax paludinosus, also known as Marsh Mongooses), are ready for release - just in time with our awesome rain!
Leanne Hezlett took the siblings up to Marlene Joubert where a soft release enclosure has been made available.
The two will be left to settle down in their new environment so they understand there is still food and safety provided there.
They are then taken on guided walks to the nearby river to familiarize them with the river and how to get back to their enclosure should they wish to be inside where they know they are safe.
After a few more weeks of this routine, their enclosure gate will be left open, leaving them to come and go at their own leisure.
Food will be continually supplied while they further learn to hunt and catch their own food, giving them the very best possibility of survival alone once they decide they no longer need the support.
Huge “Thank you” once again to Marlene and family for supplying the second critical part to their release!
Following months of rearing with Leanne, it is comforting to know these two beautiful souls will be in such a pristine environment whilst still being monitored!
Well done guys..!
