The Golden Era (1880–1947): Originally known as the town of Eden, Bar Harbor became the premier summer playground for America’s most powerful families - the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Astors. These elite residents built massive, 50-room mansions they modestly called "summer cottages" along the shore.

The Great Fire of 1947: This era of extreme wealth came to a sudden end when a catastrophic wildfire swept across Mount Desert Island. The blaze destroyed 67 of the great estates and five grand hotels, forever changing the town's social fabric. Instead of rebuilding as an exclusive enclave, Bar Harbor evolved into the more accessible, vibrant tourist destination we see today.

Acadia National Park: Our walk takes us through a town inextricably linked to the first National Park east of the Mississippi. Established in 1916 as Sieur de Monts National Monument (and renamed Acadia in 1919), the park was largely created through the land donations and vision of George B. Dorr and John D. Rockefeller Jr.
