A drilling rig is a piece of complex machinery used to drill into a hydrocarbon containing rock. Although there are many different types of rigs, they all carry out the same basic drilling operations. They have evolved substantially since the mid-1800’s at the dawn of the oil and gas industry, from the days of wooden rigs and cable–tool (chisel type) drilling; we now have Jack-up Rigs, Land Rigs, Semi-submersible Rigs, Production Platform based Rigs and Drill Ships, all capable of drilling deep, directional wells in very fast times.
