When Americans say “set up”, we can also mean:
👉 To prepare something physically
👉 To assemble
👉 To put everything in place
Examples:
• Can you set up the table?

• They’re setting up the equipment.
• They’re setting up the stage.
Real-life situation:
If you’re hosting a birthday party, you might say:
“Can you help me set up before the guests arrive?”
That means:
Help me prepare everything.
This is extremely common in everyday American English!
