Atrioventricular or (AV) heart blocks are usually caused by a delayed or sometimes absent and inconsistent electrical conduction pathway traveling through the AV node. A first degree block has a prolonged P-R interval beyond .20 seconds. A second degree, otherwise called Mobitz type 1 block, is characteristic of a progressively widening P-R interval followed by a QRS complex that is progressively delayed until it is dropped. A Second Degree Mobitz Type 2 block appears to have regular p waves with intermittent QRS complexes being dropped. Third degree complete AV heart block is when electrical conduction is completely blocked between the atria and the ventricles. The ECG will have regular P waves and regular QRS complexes, but they will be at different rates and completely disassociated.
