COOL FIGHTER JETS THAT HOVER SPECTACULAR F-35B LIGHTNING VERTICAL LANDING W/TedCam • RAF MARHAM

Описание: Ted is at the home of the Royal Air Forces 5th Gen stealth F-35B Lightning and the home of 207 & 617 Squadron, RAF Marham. It is a stormy day and although standing on the ground in strong winds is bad enough, imagine hovering in the air with 34,000 lbs of metal!

As we see the four F-35s take off, on their return, they request 'Vertical Landing' this is known as Vertical Landing or 'VL' for short. This is just like the days of the Harrier, but it really is awesome to watch. The pilots are from 207 OCU (Operational Conversion Unit), just like 29 OCU who train the junior Typhoon pilots, 207 OCU train the junior F-35B pilots for both RAF and Royal Navy.

The F-35B Lightning combines advanced sensors and mission systems with low observable technology, or ‘stealth’, which enables it to operate undetected in hostile airspace. Its integrated sensors, sensor fusion and data linking provide the pilot with unprecedented situational awareness. The pilot is able to share information gathered by the jet with other platforms using secure data links, and/or use the information to employ weapons or electronic means.

The Lightning’s short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) capability allows it to operate from the new ‘Queen Elizabeth’-class aircraft carriers and the vessels of allied nations, as well as short airstrips.

RAF Marham, home of the F-35 Lightning a 5th Generation, multi-role, stealth fighter. Based here at Marham are 617 'Dambusters' squadron and 207 Squadron, the OCU for both RAF and the Royal Navy.

The Station is also home to a range of engineering support functions from maintenance to frontline support. Over 3600 Service Personnel, civil servants and contractors work at RAF Marham.

207 Squadron formed in 1916 as 7 Naval Air Service squadron at Petit-Synthe, France, they were renamed 2 years later as 207 Squadron. They operated the Fairey Battle operational training unit at RAF Cottesmore in 1938.

In 1969, 207 Squadron reformed at RAF Northolt as the RAF Communications Squadron, but disbanded in 1984 but reformed in 2002 at RAF Linton-on-Ouse as 207 (Reserve) Squadron conducting Basic Fast Jet Training for RAF and Royal Navy pilots, disbanding again in 2012. 207 squadron stood up as 207 Squadron at RAF Marham as the F-35 Lightning Operational Conversion Unit in 2019. In their history which involved a lot of role changes, disbandments and reformation, 207 Squadron have flown the Airco DH.9A, Valiant, Avro Lancaster, Avro Lincoln and Tucano.
