How to use the Turkish Cast On (aka Winding Cast On) as a provisional cast on

This is a beautiful and easy way of beginning a scarf or wrap in its center, so that the two halves will be symmetrical, and the cast on will be invisible. It does not require a crochet hook or waste yarn, and the provisional stitches will be ready to go when you want to start the second side.

You will need two circular needles and a removable stitch marker.

Here are the steps:

• Make a slip knot and place it on a circular needle

• Place a second circular needle on top of the first one, with both tips pointing to the right

• Hold the tail from the slip knot with your left hand

• Wrap the yarn around both needles, bringing the yarn up behind both needles, over the top, and down in front of the needles. Wrap once for each stitch to be cast on, plus a few extra as a safeguard.

• When you are done wrapping the yarn, slide the bottom circular needle out of its stitches so that the provisional stitches are stored on the cord.

• Work the first row of the stitches on the top needle -- these stitches will become the first side of your scarf or wrap. Whether you begin with a right-side or wrong-side row will depend on the pattern. Here, I am beginning with a wrong-side row, working in garter stitch and slipping the first stitch of the row. When you have knitted the number of stitches called for, pull the left needle out of any remaining stitches (the extra stitches).

• Turn work and work the first right-side row. When it is complete, mark the right side with a removable stitch marker and remove the slip knot from the second circular needle.

• Continue working the live stitches until the first side is complete.

• Return the held stitches to a circular needle and work the second side of your project. Whether you begin with a right-side or wrong-side row will depend on your pattern. Here, I am starting with a right-side row, with the yarn tail from the provisional cast on at the left edge of my work.
