Today, I wanted to talk about a new report out of Korea suggests Samsung is discussing the idea of rebranding its high-end flagship smartphones.

The report mentions how the Samsung Galaxy branding has been somewhat tarnished over the years since there tends to be such a massive performance gap between them. The Galaxy S series may be their flagship series, but they also have the Galaxy A series and Galaxy M series.

And they all tend to just be referred to as Samsung Galaxy phones since the branding is so similar.

Samsung has been doing studies which show teenagers in multiple countries around the world are preferring the experience of an iPhone and they believe it's due to the differences in performance. This is starting to worry the South Korean tech conglomerate as once someone has chosen a mobile operating system it is fairly difficult to get them to switch.

Samsung's own Lee Young-hee has stated earlier this year at CES 2024, that the Galaxy brand has so many different lineups that he can understand people expecting a new brand name when there's enough innovation behind it.

And right now, they've just added a different letter onto the Galaxy brand. Even the Galaxy Z series seems like it could just be another low-end or mid-range device from the company.

Samsung continues to be leading smartphones sales around the globe, however their sales are starting to show weakness compared to the competition.

Their studies show that children's first experience with the Samsung Galaxy branding is a phone that their parents are buying for them. And since they are almost always getting a cheaper Galaxy phone, they see the performance compared to their friends' iPhone and instantly think all Galaxy phones will perform the same

And again, once a teenager has been using iOS for a few years, it becomes increasingly difficult to get them to switch to Android.


Samsung Rebranded Idea
So the company looks to be having internal discussions when comes to the idea of changing or adding additional smartphone brands to its roster.

They could end up deciding to keep the Galaxy brand for its high-end devices.
But they are also looking at the Luxury automobile brand, Genesis, and how it's done so well for Hyundai so far.
And if we think back to that quote from Lee Young-hee at Samsung, they may be planning to launch a new flagship series brand for smartphones when they've reached an innovative turning point.


conclusion
There's going to be a lost of marketing costs involved in a major rebrand like that.
Which is why this is such a tough decision for Samsung to make. They've been putting so much effort into the Galaxy branding over the years that giving it up entirely just doesn't seem smart at all.

If they have something truly innovative in mind, then a switch to a new brand for their leading-edge technology would make more sense. That way, their mid-range and low-end hardware can still benefit from the global branding they've worked on for so many years.

While putting the majority of their marketing efforts into something new.
And for a technology company who is seeing sales begin to stagnate, this could be what they need to spark the interest of the consumer.
Especially for the younger audience who seems to enjoy trying new things.

They will just need to make sure the innovation is there.
As this could easily flop and tarnish Samsung's brand even further.
