Devprayag is a small yet spiritually significant town located in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, India. It holds a revered place in Hinduism as the sacred confluence where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the Ganga, one of the holiest rivers in India. The name Devprayag comes from Sanskrit, where "Dev" means "god" and "Prayag" means "confluence”. It is one of the Panch Prayag (five sacred river confluences) of the Alaknanda River (all are covered in this travel blog series).
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama and his father King Dasharatha are said to have performed penance here. The town is also associated with the sage Devasharma, who is believed to have meditated at this spot. The merging of the emerald-green Bhagirathi and the silt-laden Alaknanda creates a striking visual contrast and draws pilgrims and tourists alike. Pilgrims take a holy dip here, believing it to cleanse sins and grant spiritual merit.
