My local train store of 20 years, Engine House Hobbies, closed over a year ago now but that doesn't mean I'm not still getting trains from Ken, the owner for the last 12 years! We met for lunch about 2 weeks ago and he gave me one of the last 2 pre-orders I have with him, the CSX "Spirit of Maryland"!
The AC4400 is a 4,400 horsepower heavy haul freight locomotive that was built by General Electric between 1993 and 2004. Nearly 3,000 units were built during its 11 year production run, with buyers including @officialcsx , Southern Pacific, @uprr , @bnsfrailway and others, including owners that “came to be,’’ thanks to various rail company mergers. The locomotives would later be replaced with the ES44 thanks to more stringent emissions standards.
Many of the CSX units were modified with additional weight to boost tractive force going to the rails. With nearly 180,000 pounds of tractive force, CSX and others often used these locomotives in the most demanding freight hauling applications such as mountain coal operations, a big piece of CSX operations.
The CSX #602 was built as part of CSX’s order in December, 1995. CSX Transportation has a history of dedicating locomotives after major terminals and the states they serve. As a result, the CSX #602 was fitted with special markings and was dedicated as the “Spirit of Maryland” in the Fall of 1996 in a special ceremony at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore.
