Zika Virus vs. Coronavirus (COVID-19):
Causative Agent:
Zika Virus: Caused by the Zika virus, a flavivirus transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes.
Coronavirus (COVID-19): Caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, a coronavirus transmitted mainly through respiratory droplets.
Transmission:
Zika: Mosquito bites, sexual contact, blood transfusion, and mother-to-fetus.
COVID-19: Respiratory droplets, aerosols, contact with contaminated surfaces, and close person-to-person contact.
Symptoms:
Zika: Mild fever, rash, conjunctivitis, joint pain, muscle pain, and headache. Often asymptomatic.
COVID-19: Fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of taste/smell, sore throat, and body aches. Can be severe.
Complications:
Zika: Risk of microcephaly and other birth defects in newborns; Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults.
COVID-19: Severe respiratory illness, pneumonia, blood clots, multi-organ failure, long COVID, and death in severe cases.
Prevention:
Zika: Mosquito control, insect repellent, protective clothing, and avoiding mosquito-prone areas.
COVID-19: Vaccination, masks, hand hygiene, social distancing, and ventilation.
Treatment:
Zika: No specific treatment; supportive care with rest, fluids, and pain relief.
COVID-19: Supportive care, antiviral medications (in severe cases), oxygen therapy, and vaccines for prevention.
