Rare MBTA Commuter Rail Consists on the North Side Work Train - Genset 3249, PNLX 9619, Caboose C-1

About this video: On September 23, October 10, and October 16, 2025, I was trackside at various locations along the MBTA Commuter Rail’s Haverhill and Newburyport/Rockport Lines to get footage of various jobs being done by the North Side work extra. On September 23, I saw them in Reading, MA heading back towards Boston after dropping off strands of rail in North Andover earlier that day. Leased PNLX GP40-2LW 9619 led several MBTA flat cars, the C-1 caboose, and GP40MC 1122. A few weeks later (on October 10), the work train was back on the Haverhill Line, this time with a train of stone cars that they were dumping ballast from in Andover. Recently re-activated Genset switcher 3GS21B 3249 was on this train along with the 9619 this time. This was the 3249’s first time operating after coming out of storage in Wareham, MA where it had been sitting for the previous several years. Before this, it was last seen operating on non-revenue moves in work train service in late 2021. I chased this ballast train move as they returned to Boston from Andover, making stops to film at various places in Andover + the Ballardvale and Wakefield stations. The pacing shot that followed was taken on Main Street in Wakefield. The following week (on October 16), the work train was out to drop off strands of rail again, this time in Beverly. The 3249 led the train out with the 9619 in back. I filmed them pulling up to Beverly Depot (where they held for an inbound) before they continued and I leapfrogged them to Balch Street in Beverly next to the location where they would be unloading the rails for the next few hours. I didn’t have time to stick around for the return trip of this move, but plenty more videos with these locomotives featured will be coming soon.
