What is miniSASS?
miniSASS can be used to monitor the health of a river and measure the general quality of the water in that river. It uses the composition of macroinvertebrates (small animals) living in rivers and is based on the sensitivity of the various small animals to water quality. A score is allocated to each macroinvertebrate giving an indication of its sensitivity to pollution. Samples of macroinvertebrates are collected from the river using a net and identified with the help of an identification key. The overall score is an indication of the condition of the river.(Graham et al., 2004, p 26-27
