How to communicate: top-down (McKinsey consultant) or bottom-up (like everybody else!)? ⚡

Описание: How to communicate: top-down communication or bottom-up communication – which communication style is the better one? Most management consultants at McKinsey, BCG or Bain as well as the great majority of business executives would argue in favor of top-down communication, a McKinsey consultant would preach to talk top down – but are they always right?

In this video, I first introduce the fundamentals of bottom-up communication, which presents the standard communication style for most of us, for instance when we tell a story and matters are presented in a chronological order from A-Z. In contrast to this, there stands top-down communication, where the key result, final conclusion or the end are anticipated at the beginning of a story or presentation. This is time-efficient communication, which is therefore often preferred by management consultants of McKinsey, BCG and Bain. It is also preached by Barbara Minto, who served as a McKinsey head coach in the 1970s and who, as a godmother of top-down communication, has published a world-famous book on this topic titled: “The Pyramid Principle”.

However, while top-down communication may be the preferred communication style in the business and consulting world, you may not forget that in certain contexts bottom-up communication might be the better choice. In this video, I offer you practical advice on how to communicate and when to adopt which communication style. I close the video by suggesting three practical exercises to help you improve your communication skills as well as experiment with the top-down and bottom-up communication styles.
