President Donald Trump hosted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House on Tuesday, as Americans are being urged to evacuate from the Middle East as the conflict with Iran escalates.
During introductions between Merz and Trump, the president said the United States has knocked out many of Iran's forces and systems.
They have no navy. It’s been knocked out. They have no air force. It’s been knocked out. They have no air detection, that’s been knocked out. Their radar has been knocked out. And, just about everything has been knocked out," Trump said.
Trump told reporters the U.S. is continuing its campaign and that "big scale hitting" will be happening now. He said Iran is "in for a lot of hurt" as U.S. forces look to "finish off the military."
Chancellor Merz said he hopes the war will end soon.
We are hoping that the Israeli and the American army are doing the right things to bring this to an end and to have really a new government in place," Merz said.
Merz said he was on the same page with the Trump administration when it comes to ridding Iran of a "terrible regime." Merz and Trump were also expected to discuss their trade agreement in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs, as well as ending the war in Ukraine.
"There are too many bad guys in this world, actually," Merz said.
Trump was also asked about who could take power in Iran once the strikes from the U.S. and Israel are complete.
The president said "someone from within" the regime might be the best choice. He also said Reza Pahlavi, the exiled crown prince of Iran's last shah, is not someone that his administration has considered in depth.
He looks like a very nice person, but it would seem to me that somebody that’s there that’s currently popular, if there’s such a person ... we have people like that," Trump said.
Trump noted that "some people like" Pahlavi, but that he was not someone his administration had thought about much.
The president said there is a third wave of people coming in, but that he was "pretty sure we're not going to know anybody."
One reporter asked Trump what the worst case scenerio in Iran would be when strikes conclude. The president was quick to answer that the worst case would be "somebody takes over who's as bad as the previous person."
On an economic scale, Trump said he wants to "cut off all trade with Spain" over NATO spending, telling reporters, "we don't want anything to do with Spain."
He also noted that many of the individuals the administration may have in mind for leadership are dead and that another group being eyed could also be dead after reports of another attack on leadership on Tuesday.
Trump would do this by imposing an embargo on Spain, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent agreed would work under the Supreme Court's recent ruling.
President Trump also shared that he was not happy with the United Kingdom, either, reiterating his complaints about the Chagos Islands being handed over to Mauritius.
The U.K. has been very, very uncooperative with that stupid island that they have," Trump said, also criticizing the U.K.'s windmills and immigration policies.
Reporters also asked the president about the prices of oil and gas rising as a result of the conflict.
"We have a little high oil prices for a little while, but as soon as this ends, those prices are going to drop, I believe, lower than even before," Trump explained.
