In this video, I will show you how a bit more focus on your aids and breathing can help you and your horse perform more balanced, timely and enjoyable trot-canter transitions. You will see how being aware of your horse’s footfall, using correct weight aids and paying attention to your predominantly driving and supporting leg aids will allow you and your horse to ride your transitions with much more ease and confidence. I will also show you how visualizing the gentle, upward lifting motion of a jellyfish will help you apply the different components of the aids cohesively so you can actively support your horse in each canter stride. Applying and practicing these pointers will progressively fine-tune your aids and foster your horse’s ability to be ‘on the aids,’ building a higher level of availability/accessibility/openness to accept and promptly react to your aids.

Horse: Cooley (Windchase KilCooley), 12-year-old gelding, Irish Sport Horse; Background: Imported from Ireland; formerly ridden and competed as an upper-level three-day-eventer; Health: Continuous, thoughtful management of stomach problems/ulcers and bouts of colics; Training: Careful ongoing Dressage and ground training while taking into consideration former shoulder injury/surgery; Temperament (0 being extremely calm/laid-back, 10 being highly excitable/hot): 7; Personality: Dominant gelding with a tendency to show resistance and twist/stick his tongue out when feeling stressed/overtaxed; easily excitable when it comes to trying to figure out new things. Sweet spot: Given plenty of time in the warm-up and clear aids, Cooley noticeably loves to perform movements he has learned and enjoys using his body as he continues to become a stronger, more balanced athlete.
Note: Viewers should consult a professional before adopting any of the training techniques shown in this video. Any activity you do with your horse is at your own risk and may produce varied results.
