Energy and shipping expert Ajay Singh, advisor to a Japanese corporation based in Tokyo, explains the volatility stems from the Strait of Hormuz blockage, through which 20-25% of the world's oil and gas flows. No oil and gas is currently being exported from the Persian Gulf, causing market alarm. Singh notes that while commercial and strategic reserves exist globally, markets are pricing in a protracted conflict. India faces significant exposure, particularly for LPG where dependence on the Persian Gulf reaches 85-90%. Singh suggests the government's announced 74 days of stocks provides reasonable protection. He indicates that ending the conflict or achieving a political settlement between Tehran, Washington, and Jerusalem is essential to calm markets, with military degradation of Iranian capabilities expected to take four to six weeks.
