1945 ex-US Army Caterpillar D8 Crawler Tractor - BIG 20.4-Litre 6-cyl diesel Engine Start-Up 💨

Описание: I had the pleasure of filming the ignition of this large 1945 Caterpillar D8 tracked vehicle, ex-US Army, during the 2025 Sagra di San Biagio in Paule (MO). This large vehicle is equipped with a 20.4-litre, six-cylinder D14000 diesel engine, which delivers 144 hp at 1,200 rpm. These tracked vehicles were the backbone of heavy earthmoving operations, widely used both by the military and in the early stages of post-war reconstruction. Subsequently, the vehicles remaining in Italy were used in construction and agriculture. In the video, you can see the main engine being started using the "pony engine" (or auxiliary or starter motor). This is a two-cylinder gasoline engine, mounted laterally to the main diesel engine, and serves as a reliable ignition system, especially in adverse weather conditions and in the absence of powerful electric batteries. The pony engine is connected to the main engine's cooling system. The heat generated by the small gasoline engine warms the coolant and, consequently, the diesel engine block, making it easier to start in cold weather. By turning the diesel engine over before combustion, the pony engine allows the oil pump to build pressure, ensuring that the internal parts (bearings, pistons) are lubricated before they undergo the stress of starting. Ho avuto il piacere di filmare l'accensione di questo grosso Caterpillar D8 cingolato del 1945, ex US Army, durante la Sagra di San Biagio a Paule (MO) del 2025. Questo grosso veicolo è dotato di un motore diesel D14000 da 20,4 litri e 6 cilindri, che eroga 144 hp a 1.200 giri/min. Questi cingolari erano il fulcro delle operazioni di movimento terra pesante, con un impiego massiccio sia in ambito militare sia nella prima fase della ricostruzione post-bellica. Successivamente, i veicoli rimasti in Italia sono stati impiegati in ambito edile ed in quello agricolo. Nel video vedete l'accensione del motore principale tramite il "pony engine" (o motore ausiliario o di avviamento). Si tratta di un motore a benzina a due cilindri, montato lateralmente sul motore diesel principale e funge da sistema di accensione affidabile, soprattutto in condizioni climatiche avverse e in assenza di potenti batterie elettriche. Il pony engine è collegato al sistema di raffreddamento del motore principale. Il calore generato dal piccolo motore a benzina riscalda il liquido di raffreddamento e, di conseguenza, il blocco motore diesel, facilitando l'accensione in condizioni climatiche fredde. Facendo girare il motore diesel prima della combustione, il pony engine permette alla pompa dell'olio di generare pressione, garantendo che le parti interne (cuscinetti, pistoni) siano lubrificate prima di subire lo sforzo dell'accensione.
