Was that a FLOP? Faking being fouled? Let's talk about it: OI LIVE.

Описание: OI LIVE is back for another great meeting. Officials Institute Chairman of the Board, Joshua Schroeder, recently hosted the October 17, 2024 meeting about Flopping - It's the new rule. Also covered were all the new rules changes for the 2024/2025 basketball season. OI members all watched a variety of videos that involved possible flopping situations that may or may not rise to the level of a faking foul.
OI LIVE meetings are conducted the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm with the intent to provide instruction for basketball officials, and assist in helping everyone get better. Watching and discussing videos in a group brings better awareness in how to apply the rules of basketball in real game situations and provides a fun and supportive environment for officials to ask questions and share philosophies by fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.

This meeting includes 9 various video clips all about flopping.

0:00 - Intro
0:50 - Rules Changes for 24/25
18:30 - Contact at the division line that is marginal but has the defender falling to the floor. Was it a Player Control, Block or a Flop?
8:38 - Another technical foul and this one was during a dead ball. There is a fine line between a talk to and a technical foul.
32:51 - Head bob on a dribbler after marginal contact on at the top of the key.
34:25 - Fast break to the other end and the shooter falls after the missed attempt. Is this a flop? Watch and hear the discussion.
37:26 - Another break to the basket and the defender throws his body backwards after the dribbler goes around him.
43:11 - Shot from the outside, player falls to the ground and the official gives a flop signal.
47:29 - Charge was called by the official. Was the official correct or could it have been a flop or a maybe a block?
51:27 - Tough play with a possible push off to marginal body contact to a player falling on the ground.
57:58 - DEFINATELY A FLOP: WATCH
1:00:04 - Meeting Schedule

Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.

The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.
