Why can a collision between a flying bird and a high-speed aircraft cause damage or even crash to the plane?
Flying bird collision refers to the event where an aircraft is flying at low altitude and approaching landing, and is hit by a flying bird head-on, causing local damage. Although the mass and speed of flying birds are not large, according to the laws of physics, the impact force is proportional to the square of mass and speed. For example, a sparrow weighing 100 grams colliding with a plane traveling at a speed of 400 kilometers per hour can instantly generate a two ton impact force, like a "shell" hitting the plane.
The cockpit windows, sensors, and engine blades of an aircraft are relatively prone to damage due to bird strikes. Especially in the intake of jet aircraft, strong air currents often suck flying birds into the engine, causing serious damage.
According to statistics from the International Civil Aviation Organization, there are over 20000 bird strike incidents worldwide each year, resulting in a cost of over 10 billion US dollars annually. Flying bird collisions have become one of the most dangerous factors threatening aviation safety.
