Garhwali Baraat
In Garhwali weddings, the Baraat (wedding procession) is not just a formal event—it’s a vibrant display of joy and tradition. The groom arrives at the bride’s home or wedding venue accompanied by family and friends, dancing to the beats of dhol damau and sometimes shehnai. Baraatis are welcomed with aarti and traditional Garhwali folk songs, and they are often served jagar (folk chanting) or light refreshments before the ceremony begins. The atmosphere is full of cheer, laughter, and heartfelt blessings.

Garhwali Phere
The Phere (circling of the sacred fire) in a Garhwali wedding follows Hindu rituals but often includes local customs unique to the mountains. The bride and groom take seven sacred rounds (saat phere) around the fire, each representing vows of love, trust, and commitment. In many Garhwali households, the priest recites mantras in Sanskrit while elderly women sing mangal geet (auspicious wedding songs) in Garhwali, blessing the couple for a prosperous married life.

Garhwali Vidai
Vidai (farewell) is one of the most emotional moments of the wedding. In Garhwal, it’s filled with both joy and deep sentiment as the bride leaves her maternal home to begin a new life. Family members, especially parents, bless her while holding back tears. Traditional farewell songs, often slow and heartfelt, are sung by women to convey blessings and the bittersweet emotions of parting. In some villages, symbolic rituals like throwing rice backward or touching the doorway are performed to wish prosperity for her new home.
