In today's episode of the "Jungle Beat" playthrough, we complete the Chili Pepper and Star Fruit Kingdoms, as well as defeat the Ghastly King.
When it comes to the Chili Pepper Kingdom, I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I find "Cloudy Heights" to be one of the best levels in the game because from start to finish, it's one big, fast-paced combo, with you being able to get the multiplier up to 17 if you're skilled enough. But on the other hand, the second level is "Magma Colosseum", which is a slow-paced gauntlet that consists of you fighting nearly every miniboss in the game.
Now if "Magma Colosseum" was just you dealing with the minibosses in of themselves- no tricks, no traps, just you and them- this level wouldn't be too bad; but because this is the "Magma" Colosseum, you also have to deal with lava, which never fails to screw me over at right at the end with the blob enemy thanks to those streams of fire that makes reflecting those projectiles more difficult than they have to be.
As for the Star Fruit Kingdom, I know that I've constantly mentioned how this game served as the foundation that the "Mario Galaxy" games were built off of, but if you still aren't convinced, just look at "Asteroid Belt". That level is literally "Mario Galaxy", but without the gravity mechanics since DK's so powerful that the laws of nature are what he wants them to be.
Though speaking of DK's power, I love how the Ghastly/Cactus King tries to come off as this grand threat, what with him being a hulking, nightmarish Kong that lives in a cave and uses a giant, fire-breathing boar as a steed, only for him to be arguably one of the easiest bosses in the game since you can reliably combo-lock him- just wall jump to reach his head, fling him into a wall, wail on him, and repeat the cycle upon being thrown off of him.
Heck, Ghastly/Cactus King isn't that much of a threat in the "Kong of the Hill" challenge, with him more or less being one final speedbump.
But while on the topic of "Kong of the Hill", I have no plans to cover it because thanks to Sumo Kong never failing to make me lose most of my bananas, thereby leaving me unable to get all three crests, chances are that I'd lose all feeling in my arms before getting a successful run. Plus, the reward for getting all three crests isn't worth it, with it just being one final level where you collect a bunch of bananas in the celebration area, which in turn rewards you with a new theme for the level selection screen, as well as DK wearing a crown during gameplay.
In regards to my next playthrough, the first episode will be uploaded tomorrow, 3/13/26.
