Over 1,000 migrating cranes have died in north-east Germany due to H5N1 bird flu, in what volunteers called an “unprecedented” and “catastrophic” event. Clean-up teams collected and transported the dead birds from meadows and shallow waters near Linum. The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut confirmed the infection.
