HMS Explained: How Huawei is preparing for Google-less future!

Описание: The US- Huawei trade war is no fresh news; we have heard about it and we have seen its initial impacts. But what we have very little information about is what is happening right now from Huawei’s side to overcome the misery they are in. In this video, we have discussed in brief about Huawei’s stand in the market right now, its Huawei Mobile services (HMS) and how Huawei is fighting for a Google-less future as a whole!

First, if you are unaware of what has been going on between Huawei and the US, allow us to inform you in short. The US kept Huawei in the Entity List, which means that it can no longer be in business with any US-owned company, on the ground of evidence found by the US government that the Chinese government is using Huawei as a backdoor to spy on it.
Although the US has not made official evidence public, we the people can derive two conclusions from it,
1. This entire thing is a strategy to suppress the superior technologies of Huawei.
2. Huawei is actually guilty of sharing confidential resources with the Chinese government.

The major concern for the Huawei ban after the ban is surely the expansion of its 5G technologies. Plus, its smartphone business is taking a considerable hit as well. After the effectiveness of the ban, almost all US based companies cut ties with Huawei. Major smartphone partners for Huawei like Qualcomm, Google, etc, and among them the impact was made by Google. After the ban is effective, Huawei will no longer be able to use Google Mobile Services (GMS) in its offerings because of which Huawei is developing its own operating system, called Hongmeng OS or Harmony OS, whichever you are familiar with.

HMS is a similar library of Huawei’s proprietary applications to replace what Google offers with GMS. It has the Huawei App Gallery replacing Google Play store, so on and so forth. On today’s date, Google’s Play Store is a front runner with 2.8 million apps while Apple’s App Store comes second at 1.8 million apps. App Gallery launched back in 2018 with the launch of P20 series of smartphones and in the present context, it serves Huawei and Honor smartphone users in over 170 countries with 390+ million active users all around the world with 180 Billion downloads a year.

With such huge downloads, Huawei has the plan to get the App Developers onboard as well. For that, Huawei is betting a whopping 1 Billion Dollars under the “Shining Star Program”. So, apart from making the HMS core services available, familiar and easy to use for the developers, Huawei is also adding advantages for developers who release their apps and games in the AppGallery. While Google charges 30% price for it, Huawei is offering it at a charge of 15% only.

The Huawei AppGallery has other significant HMS apps too, like Huawei Browser and like Google Drive, Huawei has its own cloud storage support, dubbed Huawei Mobile Cloud. Similarly, other Huawei apps are Huawei Music, Huawei Video and Huawei Assistant. All these HMS Apps and HMS itself, incorporate Huawei’s chip, device and cloud storage capabilities and integrates a set of HMS core services, tools and platforms for IDE development and testing. The HMS core services are a collection of software development frameworks that give developers quick access to the Huawei ecosystem, thus letting them build apps with ease.

After all, this is said and done, a few questions still remain, are all these efforts and investments enough and can Huawei really survive without Google? Well, that’s a debatable question. On one side, you are paying top money town a product and having to compensate for it does not make sense. But, on the other side, should a trade war side-effect such a huge and innovative company? It does not seem fair right?

However, there are a lot of other burning questions as well, as the problem of accessibility. Huawei certainly does not need to worry about its customer base in China but, the other parts of the world are a different story. So, as the first step, Huawei is in talks with top app developers all around the world and in India to build HMS- integrated applications. Huawei is all set to launch HMS in India and will be providing incentives to developers under the Shining star programs.

This will obviously take a little more time, but if HMS becomes a success, we will see the long Google- dominance fall, which will also be very interesting. As of now, we wish Huawei very good luck for its strenuous odyssey ahead!
