La città venne messa a ferro e fuoco: furono profanate tutte le chiese, furono rubati i tesori e furono distrutti gli arredi sacri. Le monache furono violentate, così come le donne che venivano strappate dalle loro case. Furono devastati tutti i palazzi dei prelati e dei nobili , con l'eccezione di quelli fedeli all'imperatore. La popolazione fu sottoposta a ogni tipo di violenza e di angheria. Le strade erano disseminate di cadaveri e percorse da bande di soldati ubriachi che si trascinavano dietro donne di ogni condizione, e da saccheggiatori che trasportavano oggetti rapinati.
189 Guardie Svizzere avevano il compito di proteggere e scortare Papa Clemente VII verso la salvezza. Se ne salvarono soltanto 42, che riuscono a scortare il Papa furtivamente verso Castel Sant'Angelo. Gli altri, dopo quasi 6 ore di coraggiosa resistenza, vennero uccisi.

On 6 May 1527 Rome was invaded by 12.000 Lansquenets
(German mercenaries hired by Charles V, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) and by the Spanish Empire. All the churches were desecrated, the treasures were stolen and the sacred furnishings were destroyed. The nuns were raped, as were the women they tore from their homes. All the palaces of the prelates and nobles were devastated, except for those loyal to the emperor. The population was subjected to every kind of violence and anguish.
189 Swiss Guards had the task of protecting and escorting Pope Clement VII towards salvation. Only 42 were saved, who managed to furtively escort the Pope to Castel Sant'Angelo. The others, after almost 6 hours of courageous resistance, were killed.
