Every morning, he kissed his wife and played with his deaf son. Every afternoon, he approved executions.
This is the story of a double life so extreme it challenges everything we understand about human nature. A man who was simultaneously a devoted family man and a brutal crime boss. Not pretending to be one or the other—genuinely both, existing in the same body, apparently without internal conflict.
How is this possible?
He met Mae when he was 19—an Irish-Catholic girl from a respectable family who fell for a scarred street tough. When she got pregnant, he married her. That marriage became the anchor of his legitimate life. By all accounts, he genuinely loved her. Provided lavishly. Protected obsessively. Remained faithful—by his standards.
Their son Sonny was born with congenital syphilis, partially deaf, requiring special attention. Instead of shame, this brought out fierce protectiveness. He doted on the boy, worried about his health, hired the best doctors, sent him to the best schools. The image of this feared criminal playing gently with his disabled son is almost impossible to reconcile with the man who ordered massacres.
His daily routine revealed the split:
Morning: Breakfast with Mae. Playing with Sonny before school. The image of any successful businessman.
Afternoon: Walking into his office and transforming completely. Approving executions. Planning strategy. Ordering violence. The absolute ruler of a criminal empire.
Evening: Home for family dinner. Tender husband and father again.
The most shocking example of his duality:
He invited three associates to dinner—men who had been disloyal. After they ate and drank with him, he stood up and began beating them to death with a baseball bat. Methodically circling the table, fracturing skulls, while others watched in horror. Then he went home and kissed his son goodnight.
The questions this raises are disturbing:
Can someone be a good father and a murderer?
Can genuine love coexist with casual cruelty?
Was one version real and the other performance?
Or was he genuinely both—equally authentic?
Mae maintained careful ignorance about his business. She never asked questions. When newspapers called him a criminal, she defended him as an unfairly persecuted businessman. Whether she truly didn't know or chose not to know remains unclear.
When he went to prison in 1931, the illusion shattered. Mae and Sonny dealt with the social stigma, financial difficulties, and reality that their comfortable life was built on blood. But Mae never abandoned him. She cared for him as syphilis destroyed his brain, stayed until he died in 1947—a confused shell of the man he'd been.
This documentary explores the most unsettling possibility: he wasn't pretending. Both versions were real. He genuinely loved his family while genuinely ordering deaths. The duality wasn't a mask—it was his actual existence.
