Located within the Gower Peninsula in South Wales is the city of Swansea (or Abertawe in Welsh).
The name Swansea is believed to come from King Sweyn Forkbeard of Denmark who founded the original Viking trading post in the area. The Normans took control of the settlement in the around the 12th century, building the castle we see in ruins in the video just after the 4 minute mark.
During the Industrial Revolution Swansea was the world's leading copper-smelting area, earning it the nickname, 'Copperopolis'. Due to its strategic importance as a port and trade city, Swansea was targeted by German bombers in 1941 in what became known as the Three Nights Blitz. As a consequence, much of the architecture in the city is post-war.
The walk starts from Oxford Street, one of the leading shopping streets in the city, and proceeds through to the Tawe Basin, where the River Tawe meets Swansea Bay. Around here we see a statue of Dylan Thomas, the famous poet who was born in Swansea.
