Sleepin' Lizards! Cold-stunned iguanas fall from South Florida trees

Описание: Residents across Florida have been seeing an unexpected and strange side effect our overnight cold front — iguanas literally dropping out of trees. The sudden plunge in temperatures has left the cold-blooded reptiles temporarily unable to control their muscles, causing them to lose their grip and fall from their perches.

Although the sight of lizards lying motionless on sidewalks, lawns and driveways may surprise onlookers, wildlife officials emphasize that the animals are not dead. Instead, the chilly conditions have pushed them into a temporary state of paralysis known as torpor, which is common among reptiles when temperatures fall sharply.

On Friday, the FWC issued Executive Order 26-03, a temporary rule allowing residents to collect the stunned reptiles without a formal permit. However, handling them can cause stress or injury, and the cold-stunned reptiles usually recover and return to normal activity once the weather warms up.
