Marble dust—also known as calcium carbonate derived from marble—is a traditional material that has stood the test of time in the art world. This fine, powdery substance is produced by crushing marble stone and offers unique qualities that make it a staple in both art supplies and studio techniques.
In this video, we break down what makes marble dust distinct from other forms of calcium carbonate like chalk-based whiting. Learn how its crystalline structure enhances absorbency, texture, and the handling of materials like oil paint, gesso, and modeling pastes. You'll also discover how marble dust is used in various products including ceramics, pastels, and even paper.
From thickening oil paints (especially when paired with Stand Oil) to adding grip and absorbency in grounds and primers, marble dust plays a functional role without drastically altering color. It’s also a cost-effective filler in student-grade paints and can be directly mixed into acrylics—although with caution to maintain paint integrity.
Beyond paints and grounds, marble dust enhances the smoothness and brightness of acid-free papers. We also touch on the innovation of stone paper—made almost entirely from marble dust—highlighting the versatility of this time-honored material.
