Fauré’s well-known Berceuse Op. 16 is another one of his popular works that bear the same name apart from the first movement of Dolly Op. 56. Premiered on 14 February 1880, little is known about the inspiration behind this piece. However, this illusively straightforward composition with an enduring charm by Fauré allowed him to secure a regular publisher, Julien Hamelle, for his works. A versatile piece, Fauré’s Berceuse Op. 16 has been played by numerous instruments apart from the violin. This piece in this recording consists of a transcription for viola by René Pollain with slight changes made to optimise the range of the instrument.
