For decades, the high seas—two-thirds of our oceans—existed beyond national control, with no clear rules or enforcement. This made them vulnerable to overfishing, pollution, and industrial exploitation.
But as of January 17, 2026, that changes. The High Seas Treaty officially enters into force, allowing countries to protect biodiversity beyond national borders for the first time. Marine Protected Areas can now be created in international waters, scientific monitoring is enabled, and environmental accountability is possible.
This historic treaty is a major breakthrough for ocean conservation, supporting the global 30x30 goal: protecting 30% of the planet’s land and oceans by 2030.
