Today, I bring you another album review, and this one is quite unconventional. While not as avant-garde as the previous Avenged Sevenfold release, it certainly ventures into uncharted territory. The album in question is "The Above" by Code Orange, a band known for defying categorization, even though they originally emerged as a hardcore punk outfit. In this video, I'll delve into the intriguing layers of this album.
Code Orange's journey began during their high school days when they formed as a punk rock band under the moniker "Code Orange Kids." Despite their youthful enthusiasm, they often found themselves too young to perform at the venues they aspired to. Their debut album, "Love is Love/Return to Dust," marked a shift towards a more metalcore sound. Over time, they evolved their style by weaving in elements of grunge, alternative rock, and industrial music. Personally, I have a soft spot for their 2017 release, "Forever," but "The Above" is giving it some competition.
The announcement of this new album came on May 30, 2023, through a rather unconventional YouTube video titled "Code Orange SLAMS modern music critics." The video featured a thumbnail showcasing critics like Anthony Fantano and Finn McKenty. However, the video took a dark turn with a disturbing torture scene, initially making it appear as though the band's channel had been hacked. The video is still accessible if you're curious. Towards its conclusion, the video unveiled a new song, which officially became the first single, released the following day.
"The Above" consists of 14 tracks, clocking in at a total of 51 minutes. Most songs fall within the 3 to 4-minute range. An exciting addition to the album is a collaboration with Billy Corgan, but I'll dive into that in more detail shortly.
JC Rock and Metal Reviews is a music channel. I mostly do album reviews and album rankings, but I also occasionally do videos where I show vinyl records, as well as CDs. My main genres are Heavy Metal, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Progressive Rock, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Progressive Metal, Hair Metal and sometimes I think out of the box with some pop, soft rock and country.
My favorite bands are Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and of course, Alice Cooper.
