Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty press night at Mayflower Theatre

Описание: AD: Gifted | The first time I saw a Matthew Bourne production was Edward Scissorhands at Mayflower Theatre back in 2006 and I became an instant fan of his unique approach.

The world premiere of Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty completed his trilogy of the Tchaikovsky ballets, having previously produced Nutcracker! and Swan Lake. It was first performed back in 2012, as part of New Adventures' 25th anniversary celebrations, and then embarked on a revival tour in 2015.

I was lucky enough to see the production on both of these runs and it is just as sumptuous and magical as I'd remembered. The world of Sleeping Beauty is transformed into a hugely atmospheric, gothic world of fairies and vampires, helped along hugely by the stunning set and lavish costumes from long-time collaborator, Lez Brotherston.

It has all of the trademarks you would expect from a New Adventures production - brilliant storytelling, playful characterisations and exquisite dancing. I'd also forgotten how brilliantly expressive the baby puppet is!

Tonight we had the wonderful Cordelia Braithwaite in the role of Aurora, Stephen Murray as Leo, Ben Brown as Carabosse / Cardoc and Paris Fitzpatrick as Count Lilac.

Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty is at Mayflower Theatre until Saturday.
