What is a Machined Spring?

A machined spring is a spring created using traditional machining methods. We start with round bar stock, with a specific outer diameter (OD). We have a proprietary process that we use to create a Helical Flexure in the parts. Based on the customer’s requirements, we can vary the pitch of the helix or spiral cut in order to affect the performance.

What are the Advantages with a Machined Spring?

One advantage is the ability to cut custom end attachments, male and female threaded ends as an example. A machined spring part is all one piece, so we basically have the Flexure section and the ends are still solid.

With a machined torsion spring, the designer has many options. You can have the torque transmitted through a bolt circle, spreading the torque around the spring surface, creating a pure moment.

We can also cut machined springs from a variety of specialty materials, depending on the application. For corrosive environments, for instance, we can cut from a 300-series Stainless. For an electrical-type application, we could use Ultem. Or for high-strength applications, we could use Nickel or homogenous steel such as C-300 or C-350.
