Content of Webinar: In January 2025, the Departments of the Army, Air Force, and Navy (Tri-Service) published a comprehensive revision of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) United Facilities Criteria (UFC) 3-130 series for Arctic and Subarctic Construction. The five-volume series, which is utilized by both government and non-government planners, architects, and engineers, was inactive due to outdated content, much of which dated from the 1950s through the 1990s. The series has been thoroughly updated to address the latest knowledge and practices in Arctic and Subarctic engineering and construction. The five volumes of the revised Arctic and Subarctic UFC series — Engineering, Site Assessment and Selection, Foundations for Freezing and Thawing Conditions, Buildings, and Utilities — deliver state-of-the-practice technical content. The revised UFC series is now available on the Whole Building Design Guide website (https://www.wbdg.org), making it easily accessible to government and industry professionals for infrastructure planning and design. These revisions are crucial for ensuring DoD mission capabilities in rapidly evolving cold regions.
Brief Introduction of Instructors: The revision team, led by the Engineering Research and Development Center–Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (ERDC-CRREL), included subject matter experts from USACE Alaska District, WSP USA Inc., Eielson Air Force Base, Doyon, the ASCE Cold Regions Engineering Division, and other federal, academic, and industrial partners. Presenters will include Dr. Rosa Affleck, Kevin Bjella, Dr. Wendy Wieder, and Dr. Wade Lein of ERDC-CRREL, and Mark Musial, Andrew Daggett, and Dr. John Thornley of WSP USA.
