Welcome to TryHackMe's "Extending Your Network" room, part of the Network Fundamentals course! In this video, we're diving into a crucial technology that allows your applications and services to be accessible beyond your local network: Port Forwarding. This was a new concept for me, and it's absolutely vital for anyone looking to understand how services like web servers connect to the internet!

What is Port Forwarding? Opening Your Network to the World
I explain how, by default, applications and services within your network (like a web server on a local IP address) are only accessible to other devices on that same network. If you want that web server to be public – accessible from anywhere on the internet – you need to implement port forwarding.

We use diagrams to illustrate this:

Local Access: A server with a private IP (e.g., 10.10.10.5) running a web server on Port 80 is only visible to other devices on its immediate network.

Public Access with Port Forwarding: We then show how a router can be configured to "forward" incoming internet traffic on a specific port (like Port 80) to that internal server's private IP address. This effectively maps a public IP address to a private one, allowing external networks to reach your service.

I also clarify the common confusion between port forwarding and firewalls:

Port Forwarding: Opens specific ports on your router, allowing traffic in.

Firewalls: Determine if traffic can actually pass through those open ports, adding a layer of security.

Crucially, port forwarding is always configured at the router of a network.

We successfully answer the quiz question, confirming our understanding of:
