Robert W. Lane served as Chief Executive Officer of Deere & Company over nine years, during which the company sustained unprecedented growth and success -- enhancing its reputation as one of America's most iconic business enterprises -- one of the great corporate citizens of the world.
He graduated from Wheaton College and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, and following an early career in global banking, joined Deere & Company in 1982. During his twenty-eight years at Deere, he held positions of increasing responsibility across a wide range of domestic and foreign divisions and was elected CEO in June of 2000.
Under his leadership, the company's net income reached unprecedented levels for five consecutive years, surpassing $2 billion in 2008, with revenues more than doubling between 2000 and 2008. As a team leader, he visited Deere facilities everywhere, no matter how small or remote, greeting hundreds of Deere employees by name.
He also served on the boards of BMW, General Electric, The Northern Trust Company, Verizon Communications, and the University of Chicago. He is an honorary director of the Lincoln Park Zoo, a national director of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
When he retired from Deere & Company in 2010, his successor, Samuel Allen, speaking on behalf of the company's 50,000 employees worldwide, said “Above all, Bob will be remembered for his insistence on integrity in all things, always telling us that how results are achieved is as important as the results themselves” -- part of his legacy to the company and the nation.
