An avid bunch of train enthusiasts, have pulled off a wonderful reinvigoration of an old forgotten railway, set in the old mining township of Herberton in Far North Queensland. In 1989 the Government of the day, declared that due to diminishing needs for freight and passenger services in the old town, the railway service which also traversed to the adjoining township of Atherton, was to cease operations indefinitely, and in 1990, the tracks were removed in various places, and the scrub and rainforest, did the job of erasing any memory of an old railway system?? That is until 2003, when a small army of volunteers, took it upon themselves to bring back to life the old railway station, and acquire some rolling stock to run from this station. Two little Pecketts & Sons steam engines were found from various sources, one was found as a static display in Mount Isa, after working in the Mount Isa mines until being decommissioned in 1955, this little locomotive has now been lovingly restored to working order, after a laborious task over 90,000 man hours, and nearly $200,000.00 in funds?? A carriage has been restored, with another under restoration, and ( 2 ) Stainless Steel clad diesel rail motors, recovered from the township of Ipswich, once used by the Government owned, Queensland Railways!! In addition, further infrastructure is also to be acquired such as rail stock, trains and carriages, and reopening the lines to Atherton once again!! We'll keep an eye on this little enterprise, and see how they venture into the future?? The Atherton / Herberton Historic Railway is seeking donations, and any help would be greatly appreciated!!
