The Cave of Tahwr (Arabic: غار ثور) is a cave located on the Mountain of Thaur in Saudi Arabia, about 8 kilometers south of Makkah. Due to its distance from Makkah, only a small number of pilgrims visit it during Hajj.
The cave is famously versed in the Holy Quran, where the Holy Prophet (pbuh) was ordered to leave Makkah by Allah to hid from the threat of his enemies. Abu Bakr went along with him and they both hid in this particular cave for three days and three nights.
While hiding from their enemies who approached closer to the cave, a tree grew in front of the entrance of the cave covering it; while a bird made a nest and laid her eggs; and a spider spun its web on the entrance of the cave, all done by the order of Allah (swt). This was referred to as the miracle of the cave and caused the enemies to disregard the cave as a place of hiding for the Prophet.
Professional trackers were hired and one of the best trackers, Abu Karz, traced the footprints of the Prophet up to the cave. However, as they neared the cave, they argued that if anyone had entered it, the web and the eggs would have been broken, but since both were intact, no one had entered it.
As the enemies drew near, in search of the Holy Prophet, Abu Bakr got very distressed and started to grieve. The following verse from Surah at-Tawbah speaks of the incident:
[9:40] If ye help him not, still Allah helped him when those who disbelieve drove him forth, the second of two; when they two were in the cave, when he said unto his comrade: Grieve not. Lo! Allah is with us. Then Allah caused His peace of reassurance to descend upon him and supported him with hosts ye cannot see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the nethermost, while Allah's Word it was that became the uppermost. Allah is Mighty, Wise.
On the fourth day, the Prophet (pbuh) along with Abu Bakr and a reliable guide by the name of Abdullah ibn Urayqit al-Daylami, initiated their journey towards Medina.
COMPANION ABU BAKR’S ROLE IN THE CAVE:
Companion Abu Bakr said, as narrated by Companion Umar ibn Khattab, “I swear by Allah that you (the Prophet) will not enter the cave before I have done so, for if there is anything in it, I shall be attacked by it, and not you.” Then he entered the cave and brushed it and found some holes in the side of it. He tore up a piece of his piece of clothing and plugged the holes with it. As there were still two enduring holes left, he propelled his feet into them and told the Prophet (PBUH) to enter the cave. When he had done, so Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) rested his head on Hazrat Abu Bakr ‘s lap and went to sleep. One of Hazrat Abu Bakr ‘s foot was stung by something in the hole, but he did not move for fear that he might disturb Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and wake him up from his sleep. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said regarding him: “Abu Bakr, you were my companion in the cave and you will be my companion in Heaven on the spring of Kausar.” After 3 days of stay in the cave the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and companion Abu Bakr proceeded their journey to Madina, where the believers (people of Makkah and Madina) who were waiting eagerly for Him.
Importance of this incident:
This incident was a very important one. It was succeeded by one of the landmark migration which changed the course of the Muslim world. The migration marks start of Islamic calendar. This incident showed that Allah is with the believers no matter how tough the situation is. How the holy Prophet and his companion were just a wall away from murder and Allah helped him out because Holy Prophet was one holy personality who could not be killed. The companionship of the loyal Abu Bakr was so clear in this incident. Many people even today, who go for pilgrimage hajj or umrah, visit this holy place.
