Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today inaugurated the much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport, marking a historic milestone in India’s aviation and infrastructure growth. The Prime Minister arrived in Navi Mumbai to a grand reception by Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, and Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. Built with world-class standards and cutting-edge technology, the airport represents a new chapter in India’s march toward becoming a global aviation hub.
Developed under a Public–Private Partnership between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd and CIDCO, the project has an estimated cost of ₹19,650 crore. Spread across more than 1,100 hectares, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is named after the late D B Patil, the respected farmer leader from the region. In his address, Prime Minister Modi said this airport will not only decongest Mumbai but also open new doors for trade, tourism, and employment across western India. He called it a symbol of modern India’s vision — where development and sustainability go hand in hand.
In its first phase, the airport will handle up to 20 million passengers annually, with future expansions planned to accommodate nearly 90 million travelers. The terminal design, inspired by the lotus flower, blends Indian art with futuristic architecture. It will be India’s first fully digital airport, featuring paperless check-in, automated baggage handling, facial recognition boarding, and virtual queuing systems. The facility also includes a large solar power plant, rainwater harvesting systems, and electric vehicle infrastructure, making it one of the country’s greenest airports.
The airport’s strategic location and direct connectivity via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, Metro Line 3, and Sion-Panvel Expressway are expected to make it one of Asia’s most accessible aviation hubs. The launch of the Mumbai One app, also by the Prime Minister, will allow travelers to plan metro, bus, and ferry routes seamlessly, offering true multimodal mobility.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said Navi Mumbai International Airport would generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs and boost exports from Maharashtra. Industrial and real estate growth in the region is projected to accelerate, with Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and Pune emerging as major economic centers.
The inauguration also holds cultural and emotional significance for local communities. The D B Patil family expressed gratitude to the government for honoring the legacy of the region’s people. As the terminal lights illuminated the evening sky, the event symbolized India’s commitment to building next-generation infrastructure rooted in both innovation and inclusion.
With the inauguration of this mega project, Mumbai joins the ranks of global cities like London and New York that operate dual international airports. Commercial operations are expected to begin later this year, following final clearances from aviation authorities. The launch of Navi Mumbai International Airport stands as a powerful statement of India’s rising global presence — a perfect blend of technology, sustainability, and vision that will redefine the nation’s journey into the future.
