Luke 20:41 But he said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David’s son? Luke 20:42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 43 until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ 44 David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?”

The quote is from Psalm 110, which is quoted in the New Testament more than any other Psalm. The religious leaders knew this was a messianic Psalm, which is to say they knew it was about the Messiah.

Jesus’s question implies a problem or difficulty with saying the Messiah is David’s son. Previously, you might have said, “What is the big deal about the Messiah being David’s son?” But now you have the background from Isaiah 11 to understand the paradox. Jesus spelled out the paradox for them:

How can David call the Messiah “Lord” if the Messiah is also his Son?

How can the Messiah be both David’s Lord and Son?

Rephrasing Jesus’s question to better understand it:

Rephrase 1: David said, “The Lord (God) said to my (David’s) Lord (the Messiah), ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.’”
Rephrase 2: God said to the Messiah (David’s Lord), ‘Sit at my (God’s) right hand until I (God) make your (the Messiah’s) enemies your footstool.’”
None of the gospels record an answer from the religious leaders. So, what is the answer? How can the Messiah be David’s Lord and Son?

Jesus Showed the Messiah Is God

The religious leaders denied Jesus was the Son of God, going so far as to try to murder Him when He made this claim. Why didn’t they deny Jesus was the Messiah? They knew so many people believed Jesus was the Messiah it would be a losing battle. Think of the number of times the people tried to take Jesus, even by force, and make Him king. The triumphal entry:

Luke 19:37 As he was drawing near, already on the way down the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

This shows how many people thought Jesus was the Messiah. Their actions reflect the Old Testament response when the Messiah came, putting their cloaks on the ground and waving palm branches.

So, let me be clear about what’s happening and why Jesus would ask this question about the Messiah being the son of David and David’s Lord: It’s like Jesus is saying, “If you believe I am the Messiah, you must also believe I am God because Psalm 110 declares the Messiah would be God.”

The Messiah is not only David’s Son, showing His humanity, but also David’s Lord because He is the Creator of all things, including David and his family, showing His deity. These verses testify to the Messiah’s dual nature as the God-man.
